We babysit a lot with our 7 grandchildren, all 8 and under. My hobby is watercolor and traveling. I have been painting since 2004 and have gone on painting trips to Greece, Sicily, Costa Rica, Croatia and France. I have also been in several art shows. My parents moved from Johnson County Kansas to Kansas City Missouri in the middle of my freshman year of high school. It was very disruptive for me socially, but I got an excellent education at Southwest and many new friends. The sorority issue was a difficult one for me, but I decided not to join one. Instead I remember devoting myself to my studies, and taking some excellent classes. I remember being very involved in Sappho Literary Society, the Sachem, and going to South America with the Red Cross the summer of 1961. Southwest was a wonderful high school. My husband Wayne knows several of my classmates independently from me. It is a small world. Six degrees of separation. 2012-08-06 20:09:09 |

After graduation, I initially I took time off from school before going to Kansas City Junior College and working in insurance with my father. But the Gulf of Tonkin incident spurred me to go back to school full time and join ROTC, rather than get drafted. I graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia in December 1967 and immediately entered active duty as an Army Reserve Officer.
I was trained on Nike Hercules air defense missiles and sent to Okinawa and a Hawk missile unit. Fortunately, the Brigade had a greater need for an athletic and recreation officer and I initially ran the gymnasium and all sports activities. But, that didn?t last all that long as more and more officers were transferred to Vietnam. Over time I was a radar site commander, company commander, and brigade assistant S2.
While on Okinawa I met my wife at a Labor Day Marine Corps Officers Club party. She was a DOD teacher from Chicago. We married on Okinawa and returned to the States after my tour of duty ended in 1970. We returned to Kansas City and I was medically retired from the Reserves.
Our twin daughters were born in Kansas City, but as we moved they grew up in Grandview and Belton. We adopted our son in 1986. I have 2 grandchildren.
I worked in insurance for a couple of years, but found I enjoyed working in manufacturing materials management more. I am currently working for a company that manufactures stair lifts, vertical porch lifts for wheelchairs and the physically impaired, and elevators. These are products all of us may end up using.
One of the most interesting recent positions I held was as a contractor representative for Triumph working on the Boeing 787 project at a local parts manufacturer.
I also currently work as the weekend manager at Carnegie Village, a retirement community in Belton.
My wife and I divorced in 2005, and I continued to care for and support our son who was struggling with mental illness.
I think the best thing I can say that once I got into college I realized what a quality education we had received. I really don't have any bad memories of high school. If there were any, I unloaded them years ago.
