After some years in San Francisco in graduate school and running a tiny printing company, I moved to Austin, Texas, in 1972 to help start Texas Monthly magazine. I was a writer there until 1981 when I became editor. That lasted until 2000, when I stepped down. Since then I've written for and consulted with various magazines and published two books - "Disarmed: The Story of the Venus de Milo" (2003) and "The Cave Painters" (2006). I also teach at the University of Texas and work part time at the Harry Ransom Center, which is the special collections library at the University. I'm also working on other books. Each summer I go to Provincetown, MA, for a month where I'm part of the faculty at the Norman Mailer Writers Center.
The tragedy in my life occured in January 2011 when my dear wife Tracy passed away after an intense battle with pancreatic cancer. We were married for 35 years. She had two small daughters when we married and then we had a daughter and a son, so together we raised four children. The three daughters are all married and are a hospital administrator, a preschool teacher, and a registered nurse working in pediatric neurosurgery. They all live in Austin. Our son works for Apple and was recently transferred from here to Cupertino. We are all close and see a lot of each other. I live in a midcentury modern building right across the street from the University so I can walk to work and to my classroom. I read a lot, travel fairly often, and fiddle around with magic. I recently started riding horses again after a ten year gap. My memories of Southwest are all good, I have to say. In particular I think of many close friends, many of whom I've seen over the years. Also certain teachers - Miss Atwood, Miss Ewalt, Mrs. McCaffrey, Mr. Gustafson, Coach Robinson. If I had to come up with something bad, it would be losing about two million straight basketball games. 2012-08-06 20:09:09 |

Valerie Hubbard in 1869. They founded Star Publications in 1976
creating high quality children's books and teaching programs. Dave and
Valerie live off grid, on a mountain overlooking the King's River in a
log cabin with solar electricity, composting toilets and spring water
near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They have three children and six
grandchildren. "It's taken me 35 years to perfect my chocolate
Truffes. I enjoy riding my 4-wheeler in the beauty of this wilderness.
The privacy of remote living and still being close to the artistic
culture of Eureka Springs. The reason I am smiling in this picture is
because I never thought I'd live to be 60 much less 69."
